At Night 04:12
In the chill of the morning, in the brightness of day You lie there beside me, got nothing to say At night I'm the person that you want me to be In the daylight a stranger is all that you'll see And I'd throw you a rope, but it's tattered and frayed The closer I hold you, the further you push me away To let someone love you isn't a crime But I know it's just only a matter of time I'm walking in shadow, I'm dancing in shade I'm lying down lonely in the mess that you made At night you're a beggar telling me lies But the sun always rises and shines in my eyes And I'd throw you a rope, but it's tattered and frayed The closer I hold you, the further you push me away To let someone love you isn't a crime But I know it's just only a matter of time Oh to let someone love you isn't a crime But I know it's just only a matter of time

Michigan 03:23
Driving to Michigan with a bright idea To change the shape I'm in, get me out of here Out of the loneliness of another year Without you I'll buy a plot of land, a little house to own Grow the things I can, learn to be alone With all the memories of a life unknown Without you I used to sit on the other side My left arm wrapped around your right Now I'm driving up 55 Without a goal in sight I've got a tired heart and it longs for rest All these stops and starts beating in my chest A rhythm slow and strong, I can feel it beating On and on So I will drive away on this highway winding Toward a better day and some peace of mind I'll sing a lullaby to the peace I find I used to sit on the other side My left arm wrapped around your right Now I'm driving up 55 Without a goal in sight Driving to Michigan with a bright idea To change the shape I'm in, get me out of here Out of the loneliness of another year

Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. - Robert Frost

I'm laying bricks one by one I'll build a wall so high you won't see me when I'm done I'm making plans to make a run My getaway's so fast you won't see which way I've gone Oh I'm an artist of evasion Got an excuse for every occasion But your power of persuasion Keeps me hanging around this old town Keeps my mind from changing So kiss me, darling, one more time Before I find another to catch this wandering eye And tell me, darling, that you'll be true Just show me the proof, cause I'm trying to stick with you Oh I'm an artist of evasion Got an excuse for every occasion But your power of persuasion Keeps me hanging around this old town Keeps my mind from changing When I've zipped up my coat Laced up my shoes You stop me feeling those lonesome runaway blues Cause I'm an artist of evasion Got an excuse for every occasion But your power of persuasion Keeps me hanging around this old town Keeps my mind from changing Yeah you're hanging around this old town And it keeps my mind from changing

Undone hair and a wrinkled dress I didn't come here to make a mess You called me up on a Wednesday night I thought it might be different this time So one more round in some dark old bar I didn't think it would get this far But I made a choice that I can't undo And let myself get fooled by you So shame on me, you fooled me twice That's what I get for being nice When the lights come up and your friends go home Who do you think you're gonna hold? Another horse in your carousel Another lie so easy to tell I read the signs and I know the rules And still I play this game of fools So shame on me, you fooled me twice That's what I get for being nice When the lights come up and your friends go home Who do you think you're gonna hold? When the lights come up and your friends go home Who do you think you're gonna hold?

Unfamiliar face in the bathroom mirror It's that time of day, it's that time of year When the feeling comes and throws me around I'm a wilted flower but I'm a fighter now Bitter medicine makes the worry fade Makes the walls cave in on the life I made But it's good for me or so they say Bitter medicine and better days Thought I knew how to follow a simple plan With a guarded mind and an empty hand Now I'm out in the open with nowhere to run I'm a wilted flower with a smoking gun Bitter medicine makes the worry fade Makes the walls cave in on the life I made But it's good for me or so they say Bitter medicine and better days I may never be counted among the blessed But I wanna believe that I'm doing my best And if I knew how to say it, I'd shout it out loud I'm free, I'm free, I'm a fighter now Bitter medicine makes the worry fade Makes the walls cave in on the life I made But it's good for me or so they say Bitter medicine and better days

Flowers can bloom when it's too cold to grow They push through the ice and the salt-crusted snow They send up their buds and begin to unfurl Alive in the soil of an unwelcome world But flowers in winter can't really survive We know in our hearts they never will thrive We welcome the joy and ephemeral spring Then pull up our collars and turn from the wind I can't win battles that haven't been fought I can't sing songs I already forgot And I can't move the planets or make the world spin All I can do is plant flowers again

about

Sara Leginsky’s solo debut is a reflection on the process of hurting, learning, healing, and moving forward. A celebration of resilience, however complicated. Written gradually over the course of three years, these songs emerged from quiet moments (a long drive, a lull in the work day, a sleepless early morning) when the mind has time to rest and drift closer to the truth.
